Via Ferrata
Calling all adventure-lovers – you have to check out the two local via ferratas in our region! Via ferrata translates as “iron path” and that is exactly what the local via ferratas are – iron paths that help you traverse across steep mountain areas.
The Ouray Via Ferrata is tucked in the Uncompahgre Gorge, which is also home to the Ouray Ice Park! It features 4,000 feet of climbing and traversing through the gorge while water rushes underneath you! This park is free and open to the public, but proper gear is needed to complete the Via Ferrata. San Juan Mountain Guides and Basecamp both rent gear and are located right in the heart of Ouray. If you’d feel more comfortable with a guide, there are four different guiding services in Ouray who offer trips. Click here for more information.
The Telluride Via Ferrata, also known as the Krogerata, is one of the most stunning via ferratas around. It traverses east to west for approximately two miles on metal rungs 500 feet above the ground. While this via ferrata is also free, due to its difficulty level, gear rentals are not available in the area. If you have your own gear, you’re welcome to attempt it on your own, but tour guides are highly recommended. Here are some guiding outfits where you can book your trip: Mountain Trip, San Juan Mountain Guides, Telluride Mountain Guides and San Juan Outdoor Adventures.
